Childhood Hunger in Southern California

In California, 25.1% of children are food insecure. According to No Kid Hungry, rates of food insecurity are substantially higher than the national average among households with incomes near or below the federal poverty line, among households with children headed by single parents and among Black and Hispanic households. Sixteen percent of Californians lack the resources needed to meet basic needs (about $24,000 a year for a family of four). This puts children at risk of not having access to nutritious food that is needed for healthy lives and proper development.

Program Details/ Volunteering

For 7 weeks during the summer, FOCUS in Southern California will be preparing and serving lunches that will be delivered to kids at the San Gabriel Library and Long Beach YMCA. We need your help for a couple hours on weekday mornings to help. With your help we will feed over 4,000 meals to kids in Southern California.

Summer feeding is a perfect opportunity for a meaningful weekly activity, students looking for volunteer hours, or just a simple way to positively impact the community. We are looking for at least five volunteers each day to make this program a success. Sign up as an individual to meet new friends, or bring a group! Click on the links above to sign up for as many days as you can, and join us in this effort to feed hungry kids throughout our community, and across the country!
