Childhood Hunger in Phoenix

In Arizona one in four children do not get enough to eat on a daily basis. That is over 1.7 million children who lack regular access to the nutritious food they need to develop and thrive. Children who experience hunger just one time are at risk of developing more severe problems later on in life due to the key importance nutrition plays in childhood development. In Maricopa County alone there are 617,970 people struggling against hunger. While federal nutrition programs have a wide reach, too many children continue to slip through the nutritional safety net.

Program Details and Volunteering

We need 5 volunteers each weekday from May 23-August 5th to pick up and deliver meals to children at the Scottsdale and Ahwatukee YMCAs.  Meals will be picked up at Phoenix Children’s Hospital at 1919 E Thomas Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85016 and then delivered and distributed at the YMCA’s. Children are most welcome to volunteer but must be supervised by an adult.

This year, our goal is to serve over 16,000 meals to kids in Phoenix. Summer feeding is a perfect opportunity for a meaningful weekly activity, students looking for volunteer hours, or just a simple way to positively impact the community. If you are interested in volunteering, click on the site name above where you’d like to volunteer. With FOCUS, it’s easy to get involved and help children in need, all summer long in Phoenix!
