Childhood Hunger in Detroit

Did you know over 300,000 Michigan children lack access to affordable, nutritious food. In fact, one in four Michigan children live in poverty, where the household income is less than $24,000 for a family of four. During the school year, nearly 50% of school-aged children qualify for free and reduced lunches. When school is out, many stomachs are left empty.

Program Details/ Volunteering

This summer, with your help, we will prepare and serve over 4,000 meals to children from Detroit, who would otherwise go hungry. Summer feeding is a perfect opportunity for a meaningful weekly activity, students looking for volunteer hours, or just a simple way to positively impact the community.
We need volunteers each weekday from 9-1 throughout the summer to deliver and serve meals to children at Metro Charter YMCA 34800 Ecorse Rd Romulus, MI 48174.  Meals will be assembled at St. Thomas Orthodox Church 29150 Ten Mile Rd Farmington MI 48336 and then delivered to the YMCA. We need at least six volunteers each day, making this a perfect group or family opportunity!
